A step-by-step guide to hanging pictures securely and stylishly
Adding pictures to your home is a fantastic way to personalise and decorate your space. Follow these simple steps to ensure your pictures are perfectly placed and securely hung.
Decide on the best hanging method for your picture. Lightweight prints need only a nail or hook. Heavier frames require wall anchors or toggle bolts.
Artwork looks best when the centre is at eye level - typically 150–165 cm (60–65 inches) from the floor.
Use a spirit level to draw a straight line where the top of the frame will sit. Painter's tape makes an excellent temporary guide.
Measure down from this line to where the nail/hook will go (usually 4–5 cm below the top for wire-hung frames). Mark the exact centre point.
For light frames: simply hammer in a nail or picture hook.
For heavier frames: drill a hole, insert a raw plug (wall anchor), then screw in the hook, leaving 10–15 mm protruding. Always match fixings to your wall type and frame weight.
Carefully lower the cord or hanger onto the hook. For larger frames, ask someone to help. Avoid scraping the wall with the frame.
The frame should sit close to the wall - not leaning forward.
Place a spirit level along the top edge of the frame. Gently adjust until it's perfectly straight. Stand back and enjoy your beautifully hung picture!
With these steps, your pictures will look fantastic and stay securely in place for years to come.
