How To.. Hang A Picture

A step-by-step guide to hanging pictures securely and stylishly

Adding pictures to your home is a fantastic way to personalise and decorate your space. Follow these simple steps to ensure your pictures are perfectly placed and securely hung.

1

Pick a Method & Gather Materials

Decide on the best hanging method for your picture. Lightweight prints need only a nail or hook. Heavier frames require wall anchors or toggle bolts.

Common tools you may need:
Nail or picture hook
Hammer
Wall anchors / raw plugs
Spirit level
Pencil & measuring tape
Power drill (for heavy frames)
2

Choose Your Placement

Artwork looks best when the centre is at eye level - typically 150–165 cm (60–65 inches) from the floor.

  • Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark the top of the frame
  • For gallery walls, plan equal spacing between prints
  • Start with one central picture, then work outwards
3

Measure & Mark with a Level

Use a spirit level to draw a straight line where the top of the frame will sit. Painter's tape makes an excellent temporary guide.

Measure down from this line to where the nail/hook will go (usually 4–5 cm below the top for wire-hung frames). Mark the exact centre point.

4

Install the Nail or Hook

For light frames: simply hammer in a nail or picture hook.

For heavier frames: drill a hole, insert a raw plug (wall anchor), then screw in the hook, leaving 10–15 mm protruding. Always match fixings to your wall type and frame weight.

5

Hang the Picture

Carefully lower the cord or hanger onto the hook. For larger frames, ask someone to help. Avoid scraping the wall with the frame.

The frame should sit close to the wall - not leaning forward.

6

Check with a Level

Place a spirit level along the top edge of the frame. Gently adjust until it's perfectly straight. Stand back and enjoy your beautifully hung picture!

Final Tips
  • Take your time with measuring - it pays off in the finished result
  • Have a partner hold the frame while you check placement before marking
  • This guide works for single prints and full gallery walls

With these steps, your pictures will look fantastic and stay securely in place for years to come.
