How To.. Attach Art To A Mount

Learn the quick and easy hinge method to securely attach your artwork to a picture mount. Perfect for everyday prints, photos, and reproductions.

This guide shows the fastest and most popular way to attach paper-based artwork (prints, photos, watercolours, etc.) to a mount. Note: This is a practical everyday method, not a full conservation technique.

For valuable or irreplaceable artwork, we recommend professional conservation framing.
If you're local to Bedford, feel free to bring it to our workshop.

The Basic Hinge Method (Recommended for beginners)

Applying tape to top edge of artwork

Step 1: Apply tape along the top edge (50% on artwork)

Positioning mount over artwork

Step 2: Position mount and press down on tape

Step 3: Use acid-free barrier board behind your artwork to prevent contact with the MDF backing. Attach it to the mount using double-sided tape on two or more sides.

Recommended Tapes
25mm or 38mm Brown Kraft Tape
Great for everyday low-value prints
PH7 Archival Tape
Acid-free & reversible - better for higher value work
Important Do's and Don'ts
  • Do only tape along the top edge - this allows the artwork to breathe and expand/contract naturally.
  • Never tape all four sides - this causes buckling.
  • This method is best for low-to-medium value artwork.
  • For valuable pieces, use professional conservation mounting (reversible, acid-free techniques).
