How To.. Clean Acrylic Glazing
Why We Use Acrylic Instead of Glass
One of the most common questions we get is: "Why don't you use real glass?"
In truth, it is not that common anymore as the majority of our customers prefer acrylic.
The misconception usually comes from cheap, thin styrene glazing found in low-quality imported frames.
Acrylic is completely different - and far superior for custom framing.
Crystal Clear
Much clearer than standard float glass
UV Protection
Far better protection against harmful UV rays
Lightweight & Safe
Much lighter and virtually unbreakable
Perfect for Shipping
Ideal for sending frames safely across the UK
Be Prepared
Always prepare everything before handling the acrylic sheet.
- Do a trial run with your artwork to check fit
- Wipe inside the frame rebate to remove any dust or flakes
- Work on a clean, hard surface (e.g. kitchen table - never carpet)
Cleaning Acrylic
The acrylic arrives with a protective film on both sides (white or blue, depending on type).
-
Wipe both sides and edges with a slightly damp microfibre cloth to reduce static
- Peel the film slowly from the outer edges inward (this traps dust inside the film)
- Handle the acrylic only by the edges to avoid fingerprints
- Gently refit into the frame after cleaning
Caring for Acrylic
Never use normal glass cleaner or ammonia-based products - they will make acrylic cloudy.
- Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth for dust
- Light fingerprints can be removed with a slightly damp cloth
- For best results, avoid commercial acrylic cleaners unless specifically recommended for optical acrylic
I have many pictures with acrylic in my own home and have never needed special cleaners - a good microfibre cloth is usually enough.
