How to Fit a Stretched Canvas into a Picture Frame (Z-Clips Tutorial)

Z-Clips are the perfect solution when your stretched canvas is deeper than the rebate of your picture frame. This guide shows you exactly how to install them safely and securely.

Key Point: It is perfectly normal for the stretcher bars to sit deeper than the frame. Z-Clips are specifically designed to bridge this gap and hold the canvas securely.

Preparation

Check the Fit

The canvas should fit into the back of the frame with a small amount of movement. Too tight a fit can cause the canvas to become baggy over time due to wood expansion and contraction.

Tools Needed
  • Small hammer
  • Flat-head screwdriver (same width as Z-Clip)
  • Pliers

Tip: Work on a blanket or soft cloth to protect the frame edges.

Step-by-Step Fitting Guide

Positioning the Z-Clips

Use roughly one Z-Clip every 30cm (12 inches) around the frame.

Make a small starter hole with a screwdriver at each position.

Take extra care not to damage the inner lip of the frame.

Inserting the Z-Clips

Tap the Z-Clip into the frame using a hammer until fully seated. Ask someone to hold the frame steady while hammering.

Fitting the Canvas

Bend all Z-Clips outward, gently place the stretched canvas into the frame, then bend the clips over the stretcher bars.

Tap them gently into the wood to secure the canvas.

Important Tip: When tapping the clips, support the lip of the frame (just below the stretcher bar) with your hand, cushion or a block of wood. This prevents the frame from cracking under the impact.

Final Checks & Tips

  • Double-check that all Z-Clips are properly seated
  • Leave a small amount of movement to allow for natural expansion/contraction
  • For very large canvases, use extra Z-Clips for added security
