A limited edition print is usually mounted with a narrow border of paper showing around the image and room below for the title and signature. This guide shows how to measure for that.

Preparation

Gather these before you start:

• Metal tape measure or sturdy ruler
• A flat, clean surface
• Pencil and paper

Step-by-step measuring

1. Prepare the workspace. Lay the print on a flat, clean surface with space around it. Make sure it lies completely flat, with no curling or bending at the edges.
2. Decide on the border. Decide how much paper you want to show around the image. Here we are aiming for about 10mm (1cm) at the top, left and right. Make the bottom border deep enough to show the title and the artist's signature.
3. Measure the area to show. With the tape measure or ruler, measure the width and height of the image plus the borders you have just decided on. Write these measurements down.
4. Measure the paper. Measure the full size of the paper, so you can make sure it will fit into the frame without trimming. It will, as long as the external mount size is larger than the paper size. Write these dimensions down too.

• Enter the two sizes from step 3 on our website.
• Choose the single or double mount option and make sure EXACT SIZE is selected, because the mount aperture needs to be exactly the size you entered.
• Check that the external mount size is larger than the paper size from step 4. If it is not, increase the mount border widths until it is.
• Go through the other framing options. We recommend choosing barrier board in the Extras tab: it sits between the print and the MDF backing board and protects the print.

Follow these steps and the artwork, title and signature will all be on show in the finished frame.

Final thoughts

Accurate measuring is the basis of a well-fitting frame. Take your time and measure twice.
