Fitting a canvas board into a St Ives float frame is quick. The frame leaves a gap all round the board, so that it appears to float. Follow these steps to get the gap even.
Tools and materials you will need
- St Ives float frame (standard or wide profile)
- Your canvas board
- Good double-sided VHB tape
- Tape measure
- Clean hands (or gloves)
Step-by-step fitting guide
- Check the frame size. Before you start, check that the frame is the right size. There should be a gap of about 15mm (standard profile) or 25mm (wide profile) on every side of your canvas board.
- Apply the VHB tape. Run a continuous line of double-sided VHB tape along the four lower ledges inside the frame.
- Peel back the liner. Peel back the tape's liner carefully, exposing only a small section of adhesive to begin with.
- Position your canvas board. Lower the board gently into the frame and take your time placing it.
- Check the gaps. Look to see that the gaps are even all round, then confirm with a tape measure that the spacing is the same on all four sides. Make any small adjustments while only a little of the tape is exposed.
- Secure the board. Once it is in position, press gently near the exposed tape. Remove the rest of the liner, then press firmly and evenly around the whole board so that it bonds well.
- Add the hanging fixtures. Fit your hanging fixtures (D-rings, sawtooth hangers and so on) to the back of the frame.
Final step: hang it
Hang your framed piece where you can enjoy it. The St Ives float frame gives a modern, gallery-style finish.
Tip: Work on a clean, flat surface and handle the frame and board with clean hands to avoid marks.
