Be an early bird and have some fun with sunrise photography

How to photograph a sunrise: arrive early, know your camera settings, come back on several mornings, and shoot the landscape as well as the sun.

The sun rising over a landscape

Early risers are becoming rare, especially at weekends. But for a budding photographer there is no better time to set up camera and tripod than sunrise, the golden hour, cloud permitting.

Be there before the sun

Arrive half an hour before sunrise so you can get everything ready. A quick search, or the weather app on your phone, will tell you the time. That half hour is full of anticipation, because you never quite know what you'll get.

You may be able to take the perfect shot from your garden, balcony or window. Most of us will have to travel a little. Allow extra time in the morning to reach your spot. If you're really keen, hike in and camp overnight, or take a motorhome to an open space where you can photograph the sunrise among nature at its best.

Keep an eye on the sky. At the first sign of it lightening, have your camera ready. The sun may take a while to appear over the horizon, and the colours go on changing for some minutes after it does, so keep shooting. You may even catch some wildlife, such as muntjac and rabbits.

Know your camera

For still photography we think the DSLR reigns supreme. It is ideal in low light, which is what you'll have as the sun comes up. For your first shots use a low ISO and a small aperture, then adjust as the light changes.

Go back on several mornings

With experience, and the weather on your side, you may get fantastic pictures at the first attempt. In the UK, though, the best of a sunrise may last only a few minutes. If you do succeed first time, you'll probably be back out before long, trying new settings and new locations.

Photograph what's around you, not just the sun

Some of the most interesting nature photographs are taken at sunrise, when the light falls on trees, long grass, lakes, ponds and rivers and gives them a completely different look. Take a moment to notice what the light is doing to your surroundings, and capture as much detail as you can. You can come home with great photographs even if you never shoot the sun itself. Preparation is the key: the right gear, in the right place, at the right time.

Print and frame your favourites

When you're happy with what you've taken, print some of your favourites. Have them framed and proudly hang them around your home, and the early start will feel all the more worthwhile.
