Summer Staycation Memories

Five ways to keep the memories of a holiday close to home: a jar of beach finds, a themed gallery wall, a travel journal, postcards and a framed map.

Instant photos from a holiday

Many customers have come to EasyFrame for custom picture frames to keep the highlights of a staycation, and we have been more than happy to oblige. Here is why holidays at home took off, and five ways to keep the memories.

Why staycations became popular

A word on terms first. Strictly, a staycation is a break taken at home, and going to stay somewhere else in the UK is simply a holiday. Most people now use the word for both, and so do we here.

The reason is no mystery. In 2020 and 2021 the pandemic changed how we shopped, whom we could see and where we could travel. With foreign travel uncertain, far more of us holidayed in the UK. There were other reasons to like it:

  • Less hassle. No queues at the airport, no changing rules and no soaring prices.
  • A proper break. Holidays stop us burning out. Booking something you would not usually do gives the whole family something to count down to.
  • A change of scenery. A week off spent catching up on chores is not a rest. Going somewhere else, even nearby, is.
  • A slower pace. There may be less sightseeing and fewer restaurants, but with a little planning there is still plenty of fun to be had.

1. Ornaments and jars

You know the story. The children spend hours on the beach collecting sand, pebbles and shells they cannot bear to part with. They promise to treasure them, and the lot ends up at the back of a wardrobe or gathering dust on the bathroom windowsill.

Help them turn it into something special. Fill a jar with what you brought back and label it with a picture of where it came from: Cornwall, Devon, North Wales or wherever. Years later it will take them straight back to that holiday.

A gallery wall is one of the best ways to show a set of framed pictures, and a theme such as travel takes the viewer on a journey. It gives visitors something to look at, keeps the memories alive and starts conversations about what you did that day. It need not be all photos, either. Those finds from the beach will work a treat.

3. A journal

It is an old idea that has stood the test of time: pick up a pen and write about your travels. Travel journals are easy to find. Buy one for each trip, or one big one for all your holidays. Do not only write in it. Stick in ticket stubs and photos as well.

4. Postcards

Remember postcards, the things we sent before WhatsApp and Facebook? Some people think them old-fashioned, but we think they still have romance. Send them to friends and family, or stick them in a scrapbook beside your photos and notes.

5. A framed map

Have a map of your favourite destination framed, with family photos pinned to it. It gets the whole family involved and makes a display that is yours alone.
