Most of us feel stressed at some point every day, some more than others. The same routine of waking early, sitting in traffic, working, coming home and cooking can pull you into a cycle that feels overwhelming. When you're stressed, it is hard to get anything done, however good your intentions.
A framed picture of nature
Here's a small thing that can help: a framed photograph of nature.
Studies over the years have suggested that hospital patients whose beds face a window with a view of trees and plants recover more quickly than those without. If a view of nature can do that, it's a good reason to have this kind of picture on your wall.
Many of us found new routines during lockdown and took regular walks among the trees. We know it's good for us, and part of the reason is that it brings us closer to nature. The breeze, birdsong, running water and rustling leaves all help. When the stress feels too much, a walk is an ideal way to relieve it.
On days when a walk isn't possible, the next best thing is to surround yourself with images that bring some of that calm indoors.
Choose a peaceful picture
Not every nature photograph is calming. A dark canvas of lightning strikes won't lower anyone's stress. Look for peaceful subjects:
- birds flying over an open lake at sunset
- rolling meadows under a blue sky
- a cherished family photo taken outdoors.
Put it where you'll see it
What do you see when you wake up? If it's the red glare of the alarm clock, and with it the thought of the traffic jam and the mountain of tasks ahead, try changing the view. A framed picture of a bird, or a family photo taken in nature, beside your bed can create a sense of calm without your thinking about it.
Then consider what you see when you walk out of the bedroom. A bare wall there is a chance to set the tone for the day with an image that motivates you.
A picture of nature won't solve all your problems. But small changes that make your day a little better are worth making, and they can set bigger ones in motion. Give it a try.
