Mother's Day Nostalgia: celebrating family through photos

Framed photographs make a Mother's Day present with real meaning. Ideas from old family photos and handwritten letters to children's drawings, keepsakes and holiday postcards.

An engraved picture frame

Mother's Day is the time to thank our mothers for all they do. If you are stuck for a present, consider a picture frame. Frames are always popular, and for good reason: they turn a treasured memory into something to enjoy every day. Here are some ideas.

A nostalgic throwback

Nothing beats a sentimental gesture. Find some old photos from your mum's younger years and have them framed. A rustic wooden frame adds country charm, and an antique-style frame gives a vintage feel.

Whatever frame you choose, think about the presentation. Arrange the photos with care and add a personal touch, such as a handwritten note or a ribbon.

A present for a photographer

If your mum loves taking photos, a camera accessory might be welcome. Or put together an album or scrapbook of memories for her to look back on.

If you are feeling creative, you could even make a frame yourself. There are plenty of tutorials online, and it need not take long.

A posed family photo

A posed photo captures everyone at a moment in time. Because you plan it, you control the setting and can make sure everybody looks their best. It works for birthdays, weddings, graduations and family holidays as well as Mother's Day.

Think about the composition, and choose a setting that flatters everyone. Props or a backdrop can help, or ask a professional photographer.

Handwritten letters and poems

Few things are as personal as a handwritten letter or poem, written with one person in mind. Framed, it becomes something she can read every day.

Keepsakes

A rummage through the family keepsakes is a pleasure in itself, and you may well find something worth framing: a ticket, a certificate, a recipe in her mother's handwriting. Take your time choosing a frame that suits it.

Children's drawings and home-made art

A child's drawing in a proper frame looks wonderful, and mums treasure them. For anything three-dimensional, such as a collage or a model, use a box frame, which has depth behind the glass. For drawings and paintings, a traditional wooden frame is ideal.

Old postcards

If your mum has kept the postcards you sent her from holidays and trips abroad, frame a few. You can show the picture side of some and the message side of others, or use a frame that is glazed on both sides. Put a photo of the two of you from the same trip alongside for a lovely collage.

Conclusion

Whichever you choose, it is the thought and effort that count, and a well-chosen frame shows both. Our picture frames are made to measure, so they will fit whatever you want to give. Happy Mother's Day!
