Posters are a timeless way to express our interests and personality and to bring a room to life. They often become collector's items, and reminders of the things we enjoyed in our youth.
If you buy posters, you'll want them on the wall. But you're an adult now, hopefully with good taste, and a blob of Blu Tack in each corner won't do.
So what is the best way to display a poster? A frame, of course! You've had photos, family portraits and certificates framed, so why not a poster?
Where to get it framed
- A local picture frame shop. A run-of-the-mill shop often has a limited range of frames and materials and offers a one-size-fits-all service. Many chain retailers import ready-made frames in poor materials, and the workmanship suffers.
- A specialist online framer. Often the best option is a specialist who can do the job for you, and the internet puts one a few clicks away. We have a wealth of experience, and it ensures that every frame and mount we produce is of the highest quality.
How to frame a poster yourself
- Decide whether to use a mat. A mat (mount) gives contrast and an extra border between the poster and the frame. It can also make up the difference when the frame doesn't fit the poster exactly.
- Choose the frame. The options run from budget plastic to high-quality metal or composite. For a vintage poster, look at well-made wooden frames, which protect it and suit its period.
- Open the frame. Undo the hinges or clips and take out the contents.
- Clean the glazing inside and out with a clean, soft cloth and let it dry.
- Attach the poster to an adhesive backing board. Posters are usually rolled, so they rarely lie perfectly flat. A foam board makes framing easier and adds protection.
- Slide the glass or plexiglass into the frame.
- Fit the mat, if you're using one, behind the glazing.
- Slide the poster and its board gently into the frame behind the mat.
- Add the backing, if there is one.
- Attach the hanging fittings.
