It's easy to get bored of the same photographs on the wall. Sometimes all it takes is a little creativity to breathe life back into an ordinary display. You can find unusual things to frame without leaving the house, and get the children involved in making pieces with real sentimental value. Here are three ideas.
Antique jewellery
You don't need anything expensive, just something that catches your eye. Be aware that antique jewellery shops often sell collectable pieces with hefty price tags. If you'd rather not spend anything, look at home. You may find an heirloom such as your grandmother's brooch, which would look perfect framed.
Instead of keeping old jewellery locked in a drawer, put it on display.
- An item with some depth can go in a standard frame without glazing.
- For pieces with small gemstones or anything that could come loose, use a box frame, which adds protection and holds everything in place.
- Antique brooches, watches and necklaces look stunning against a mount in a neutral colour.
Foreign currency
Many of us have old foreign banknotes lying around. They are an unusual thing to frame, and a great complement to holiday pictures, especially of famous landmarks you've visited.
One of our customers visited the Andes on the border between Argentina and Chile. Crossing the Hua Hum Pass, they photographed it from the Argentinian side. An Argentinian note beside that picture marks the view from Argentina. A picture from the Chilean side, with a Chilean note, completes the story of the border.
You could also tell the story of all the places you've been. A multi-aperture frame can hold a collection of notes from every country you have visited.
Origami
Origami designs are simple yet fascinating, and they have captured people's imaginations for centuries. Whether it's a flower, a butterfly or another popular design, there are plenty of videos online to teach you. With a standard A4 frame and mount you can combine several different designs in one frame.
Finding what works
It can take some trial and error to find the combination that suits you. If you get stuck, look at our earlier blog posts on ways to hang your pictures, or visit our Facebook and Instagram pages for examples of our customers' best work.
