Interior design is an excellent way to express our tastes and passions, because it gives us full creative control of a space. A well-considered design can even add value to a home. Here are our top five decor and framing trends of 2021.
1. Divided rooms are back, and minimalism is out
Large open-plan spaces have been popular for a decade, thanks to the minimalist look. They make a home seem larger and more connected. But sound and smells travel easily through them, and as minimalism loses favour, more traditional, divided rooms are returning.
Framing plays a part. People use frames to mark the difference between one room and the next. The lounge may have one style of frame and the hallway another, so each room has a feel of its own.
2. Floating frames are growing in popularity
A float frame sandwiches a piece between two clear sheets of acrylic or glass, so it appears to float. It makes a strong visual impact and suits a wide range of materials. Expect to see more of them through 2021.
3. Maximalism and louder decor
As people move away from minimalism, a busier, less balanced look is becoming accepted. The Japanese idea of wabi-sabi, accepting imperfection and living with it in harmony, is part of this. Homeowners now want comfortable spaces that don't follow one theme but are full of different designs with character.
4. Shadowbox frames take centre stage
A shadowbox frame is an enclosed, glass-fronted frame, much deeper than a standard one, made for items with depth. It is a perfect way to display sporting memorabilia or the drumsticks of your favourite band.
5. Quality is in demand
People are willing to spend more of their hard-earned cash on products and furniture in 2021. They want things that look exquisite and are well made, and they are hunting for quirky pieces that add personality. Natural, organic materials are favoured: wooden objects and bespoke frames, handmade and given the extra time a quality finish needs.
