2018's Unmissable Art Exhibitions

Nine exhibitions worth travelling for in 2018, from Basquiat at the Barbican to Frida Kahlo at the V&A, plus what to do with the print you bring home.

Visitors looking at framed paintings in a bright art gallery

Being an art lover has never been easier. Books and prints from artists around the world are a click away, and most of us live within an hour of a good gallery.

We like to keep track of what's coming up around the country. January can feel flat after Christmas, so here are the exhibitions we think are worth a trip in 2018, whether you're a seasoned gallery-goer or you've resolved to learn more about the greats.

Basquiat: Boom for Real, The Barbican, London

Jean-Michel Basquiat died at 27, but in his short life he changed the art world. He arrived on the New York scene in the 1980s and pioneered a neo-expressionist style that is still championed today. The Barbican is showing more than 100 of his works.

Dates: until 28 January 2018.

Game of Thrones Tapestry, Ulster Gallery, Belfast

If you're more into television than fine art, this one may be for you. The Ulster Gallery is showing a huge hand-woven tapestry of the major events from series one to six of Game of Thrones. It contains 250,000 threads placed by hand, and further scenes will be added as the seventh and final season airs.

Dates: until 4 March 2018.

Constable & McTaggart, Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh

Described as "A Meeting of Two Masterpieces", this tiny exhibition consists of just two works: John Constable's Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows and William McTaggart's The Storm. It is free to enter, draws a clever connection between the two paintings and brings the Scottish artist McTaggart the attention he deserves. A good way to spend a lunch hour.

Dates: until 25 March 2018.

Stanley Spencer in Focus, Stanley Spencer Gallery, Maidenhead

Stanley Spencer has his own gallery, but he is not as well known as he should be. This exhibition of paintings and works on paper from the Cookham Collection is a good introduction to an influential English painter, most famous for his intimate nudes and self-portraits.

Dates: until 25 March 2018.

Modigliani, Tate Modern, London

Modigliani was controversial in his day. His first solo exhibition in Paris was censored after a complaint to the police about one of his nudes; the story goes that the pubic hair on display caused the offence. Today his works are among the most in demand on the planet. The Tate Modern is showing more than 100 of them, including 12 nudes.

Dates: until 2 April 2018.

Age of Terror: Art Since 9/11, Imperial War Museum, London

A great deal has changed since 11 September 2001, the art scene included. This exhibition brings together important works made in response to war, terrorism and conflict since that day. More than 40 British and international artists are represented, including Ai Weiwei and Grayson Perry. Sobering and vital.

Dates: until 28 May 2018.

Roy Lichtenstein in Focus, Tate Liverpool

Tate Liverpool charts Roy Lichtenstein's progress from his early years to his last works. You can see his early interest in landscapes, his famous comic-inspired pop art and a three-screen film installation.

Dates: until 17 June 2018.

The BFG in Pictures, The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle

Not every exhibition has to centre on someone from an art textbook. This show of Quentin Blake's work may be our favourite on the list. Curated by Blake himself, it features 40 original artworks made to accompany Roald Dahl's much-loved book. The Bowes Museum in County Durham is a wonderful spot for a day trip, too.

Dates: 14 July to 30 September 2018.

Frida Kahlo: Making Herself Up, V&A, London

We're great fans of Kahlo's work, but we'd be lying if we said we knew much about her life. This exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum shows some of her most intimate personal belongings, exhibited outside Mexico for the first time, alongside some of her paintings.

Dates: 16 June to 4 November 2018.
